Community Conversations: “School Shootings and School Safety”

Laura opened the panel by framing the procedures and protocols followed by the Dean’s Consultation Committee. Joseph Lieberman shared his original research of the social and psychological profiling of school shooters internationally, and his collaborations with scholars to identify the root causes of school violence. Todd delivered a PowerPoint presentation distilling his career work developing Safe, Healthy and Positive Environmental Design (SHAPED) for schools and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). Finally, Betina and Rebecca Lynn share their personal experiences with the tragic events that unfolded at Thurston High School, as well as the challenges of healing (both as individuals and as a community).

Community Conversations is an academic program that is one of the Living Learning Initiatives of University Housing in partnership with the Clark Honors College, the Oregon Humanities Center, and Undergraduate Studies. The goal of Community Conversations is to stimulate intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, contrarian debate, and articulate discourse among the 3,300+ residential students at the University of Oregon.
