Professor Ian Haney-Lopez, a former student of Derrick Bell at Harvard Law School, is the John H. Boalt Professor of Law at the University of California, Berkeley. Haney-Lopez’s books include “Racism on Trial: The Chicano Fight for Justice” and ” White by Law: The Legal Construction of Race.” His new book, titled “Dog Whistle Politics: How Fifty Years of Race-Baiting Wrecked the Middle Class,” will be published in 2013.
