Doug Peacock: “The Greatest Adventure: A Survivor’s Guide to a Melting Century”

Peacock spins an adventure tale rooted in paleontology and archeology that has serious implications for the future of humans and other creatures who inhabit this planet. Peacock explores the relationship between global warming and the importance of wilderness, and offers “lessons of courage and caution for modern people.”

Doug Peacock is a renegade naturalist, grizzly bear expert, wildlife advocate, and defender of wilderness. He is the author of Grizzly Years, Baja, and Walking It Off: A Veteran’s Chronicle of War and Wilderness. His latest book, co-written with Andrea Peacock, is The Essential Grizzly: The Mingled Fates of Men and Bears.

A Vietnam veteran and former Green Beret medic, Peacock was the real-life model for Edward Abbey’s George Washington Hayduke inThe Monkeywrench Gang. Peacock was named a 2007 Guggenheim Fellow and a 2011 Lannan Fellow for his work on a new book about archeology, climate change, and the peopling of North America.
