George Packer, staff writer for The New Yorker and the author of The Unwinding: An Inner History of the New America. Packer describes the forces that have transformed American institutions and concentrated political power. He also talks about how the electorate feels abandoned by both political parties and harbors resentment toward intellectuals. Packer gave a lecture, “American Identity in the Age of Trump,” at the University of Oregon in Eugene and in Portland on January 24th and 25th, 2018 as the Oregon Humanities Center’s 2017-18 Kritikos Professor in the Humanities.
