Talk by Scott P. Kelsey: “Architecture for Learning, Discovery and Healing”

CO Architects has a sustained belief in the importance and power that innovative architecture can make in the mission of an institution. We see our role as contributors to help create a future where learning, discovery and healing can be more effectively interdependent and realized. We are as dedicated to understanding the evolving nature of an Institution’s programs as we are to place, architectural response, functionality and sustainable solution. In this talk, I will describe projects for education, science and healthcare that represent our strategic approach to solving an interconnected set of ideas, aspirations and architecture.

I will share a brief background to the evolving practice of CO Architects, notably describing our roots and shared values, and how we have continued to maintain our creative energy and cultural vitality. I will then share three case studies that represent the interconnectedness of our practice and evaluate these projects from the perspective of program evolution, planning approach, response to place, and architectural expression. They include: 1) Life Sciences Building at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, Calif. 2) Health Sciences Education Building for the University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University, Phoenix, Ariz. and 3) Palomar Health’s Palomar Medical Center, Escondido, Calif.

CO Architects is a single, Los Angeles-based studio. We are a 95-person, team-based, crossdisciplinary practice. We have the privilege of working on transformational projects for institutions throughout the United States. In 2014, CO Architects was awarded the AIA/California Council Firm of the Year Award.
